The second annual Digital Progress Report covering developments in digital-radio, including digital device share of radio listening, has been published by Ofcom. The analogue to digital switchover will only be made when 50% of all radio listening is via digital platforms and when national digital radio reaches 90% of the population, all major roads and coverage is comparable to FM. There are a number of different digital radio platforms: radios, television and the internet. These are currently estimated to cover 66.2% of households with 11-12% of home radios being digital but only about 1% of vehicle radios. More than one third of households in the first quarter of 2011 claimed access to a digital radio and among those without one 21% claim that they are “likely” to buy a set in the next 12 months.
