Unpatentable process patentable

The Intellectual Property Office has allowed an appeal which means that a method of image-processing is patentable. The case concerns a computerised method of processing images so that words can be associated with them thus making them searchable on a database. The hearing officer disagreed with the initial examiner who referred to a previous case which limited patentability to image-processing which improved the quality of the image. The contribution of this invention was processing the image data by applying mathematical techniques in order to achieve a different outcome.
