Since commercial use of the internet began to develop in the 1990s, Karen has been working at the forefront of the fast-evolving legal frameworks which impact on the use of the internet by individuals and organisations.
Karen has worked as senior manager and partner in large traditional law firms, as well as in-house lawyer at some of the UK’s most highly regarded broadcasting, media and internet companies. She therefore has a broad and detailed knowledge of commercial law, extensive experience of practising in the widest range of circumstances, alongside a comprehensive awareness of the ways in which lawyers operate in these different kinds of organisation. She specialises in:
- IT and internet
- intellectual property law
- drafting and negotiating commercial contracts
She also has particular skill in the art of conflict avoidance and resolution in business situations.
Qualifying in 1993 and starting her career at leading multinational law firm Clifford Chance, Karen held in-house positions at the BBC, the Press Association and Demon Internet, before becoming a senior manager at Andersen Legal and then partner at two large Milton Keynes law firms: Fennemores and then Borneo Linnells, where she headed the commercial department.
By 2005, Karen was putting together the world-class professionalism of her early years at Clifford Chance with her experience of the rapid deployment of new technologies in the media, broadcasting and internet world, and comparing it with some of the traditional aspects of the law firms where she was moving into senior management roles.
With a passion to innovate, and to retain the stimulation of her work with clients, she believed that it would be possible to provide a better and more cost-effective service for businesses.
After a brief spell with young internet-based Lawyers Direct, in 2008 Karen set up Novalex Solicitors as a virtual practice.
Initially a sole practitioner, under her direction Novalex has gradually expanded to become an exclusive network of experienced legal consultants, stringently selected to uphold her values of approachable professionalism and conscientious focus on providing both excellent value and the highest quality of legal practice.
What Novalex clients have been saying about Karen’s work
“I have been impressed with Karen’s thorough and commercially-minded work on a number of contracts. Being in the digital marketing, content acquisition and technology platforms space, we are dealing with a number of very new and complex issues, which Karen seems to grasp very well. I am based in Asia so have appreciated Karen’s willingness to be flexible with time zones in order to deliver work in a timely manner.”
Jo Wise, The Security Company (International):
“Karen has been our trusted advisor for many years. We have always found her to take a practical approach to any problem, being considerate of the factors a small business needs to take into account when approaching a legal conflict. From day-to-day drafting requirements to more serious challenges, Karen has helped us to manage risks and see clearly the answers to problems that might have seemed insurmountable. She is not afraid to stand up for her clients when it’s needed and to advise them when it would be sensible to back down. An added bonus is Karen’s large network of professionals which we have called on to help with tasks outside her own remit. We find Karen’s services represent good value for money as she keeps us informed at all times of the likely costs of the various assignments she undertakes.”
Karen Davison – Cognitive Ink:
“My company engaged Karen Mason to advise us on intellectual property law, on the recommendation of another lawyer; she has more than lived up to our high expectations. Karen is incredibly professional, efficient and very personable with a sharp legal mind and the ability to explain matters very clearly. She is a woman of integrity and takes a refreshingly sensible approach to fees. Karen grasped the company’s situation very quickly, assessed and anticipated the challenges that we faced and drew up contracts that met our needs. Her advice has been and continues to be invaluable, and has saved us from making some very expensive mistakes. I have no hesitation in recommending her to potential clients.”
Martin Smith – The Security Company (International):
“Professional in every way, and first class customer service.”
